Cinco de Mayo

The Albatross

Sunday 05 May 2024

The 5th of May is mainly celebrated in America, not in Mexico. It commemorates the Mexicans beating up the French. As good a reason to celebrate as any.

We found a place offering minigolf and margaritas down the road in Monterey, which sounded like a brilliant way to spend a sunny Sunday and get in a festive mood. It wasn’t. The mini golf was in the windowless basement and looked quite average. We skipped it and went to explore Cannery Row, which was the setting for a John Steinbeck book by the same name. Quite a few interesting fading information boards of people and places in town that influenced his writing, however, the street is now basically a tourist trap and busy on a Sunday morning with most people headed towards the aquarium.

After a look around we thought we’d find some lunch, and headed around the bay to Fisherman’s Wharf. We had a rather delightful seafood lunch looking over the water and sipping a couple of quite potent Mango Mojito’s. There were a couple of sea otters floating around, however they never came close enough for a decent look.
