We went for a drive on Hwy 1 today, as far south along it as we could. This road is the one that hugs the coast and goes down through Santa Maria, where we were a couple of nights ago. As it is closed in a couple of places (cleaning up rock falls and fixing roads) we couldn’t drive along it. But it is open a little bit of the way south of Monterey for about 16 miles. Unfortunately, this meant we couldn’t get to Big Sur State Park, which has been recommended to us by a few people. We just drove south for as far as we could, stopping at the lookouts and then turned around and headed back. At one stop we saw three unicorns of the sea (sea otters) in a cove, floating on their backs on a bed of seaweed and looking really quite cute. The coast is gorgeous, rock cliff disappearing in the ocean on one side and then huge green hills on the other side.
We took a different way home the wound through the hills with great views along the valleys. Unfortunately, there were no spots to stop to take some happy snaps or have the picnic lunch we had packed.
