I got out of bed before 8am today. First time this trip!! But I still got my morning coffee in bed, which I have had each morning of our trip.
According to the weather people, we were supposed to get a lightning storm through around 11am. We thought it would be good to go to the beach to watch it roll through and see the angry sea gods. We are in McKinleyville, CA. There is a spit/peninsula on the other side of the bay where you can literally drive onto the beach if you want to, we didn’t. We cruised on over driving past Manilla and Samoa all the way to the and the Samoa Dunes Recreational Area. On the map it looked like there could be a nice walk along the inlet and out to the jetty and lighthouse. There was a path beside the inlet, but it was a bit stormy and the water was crashing in. We chose not to go for the walk but watch the waves crash against the breakwater. We also saw (and heard) some seals, who were huddled together on a buoy (or small lighthouse as someone may have mentioned the other day thinking it was a rock and got given lots and lots of shit about it).
There was a couple who also came for a look and seems to be taking selfies. They weren’t paying enough attention and nearly got drenched by a huge wave.
Heading homeward, we stopped on Woodley Island, which is in the bay and a nice view to the over the boats to the Old Town part of Eureka. Old Town was lovely to drive through, lots of old building, circa 1850s I think.
Next stop, Safeway to stock up. However, half way through our shopping the lights went out. So, we stood around for 15 mins wondering if the power was going to come back on. It didn’t. I overheard an old lady complaining that the lights were coming back on because someone else told her it shouldn’t be long. Everyone else just stood around waiting. We decided to ditch and head home for some lunch. The big storm with lightning that was supposed to happen, didn’t happen at 11am or even after lunch.
After lunch we hoped that the power was back on at Safeway so headed out. The power was still out so we stocked up across the road at the hippy, organic supermarket. Even the wine is organic, urgh.
That storm that didn’t happen, it finally hit around 3pm. The power went out, it started to hail, the wind picked up, it got dark, it rained, there was thunder and lighting. Looking up the weather info, it was recommended that if you are outdoors that you go indoors. Glad I’m not staying in a tent right now.
After about an hour the power came back on. This is the conversation we had:
Tuna: “Power’s on.”The Albatross: “Hurray, I don’t have to talk to you anymore.”A pause of about a minute. The Albatross: “Love you.”
