Frantic green people and idiots in red cars

Sunday 17 March 2024

The day started well, I had coffee in bed (again) and the sun was shining.

We actually had a good plan for today. Visit Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, look at the Space Needle (as it is right next door) and then lunch down on the beach with nice views. We even scoped out the best parking garages too. Off we went.

For some reason most of the roads around our designated parking garage were close with the police making sure you didn’t do something you weren’t supposed to. There were also lots and lots of people walking around dressed in green. It is St Patrick’s Day, but we are in Seattle which is a few kms away from Ireland. It seems that they like to celebrate St Pat’s Day very well here. After a couple of dead-end roads due to closures, a few cops staring at us as we looked like deer in the headlights trying work out what and where the f’ng hell to go and some yelling at each other we got out of there. We tried to get to two parking garages, the first one we couldn’t get to at all and the second one had jacked up their prices to USD25 flat rate. We eventually chose to flee downtown Seattle and head back over the bridge to West Seattle. However, on the way we had to deal with and listen to blokes in bright read sport cars driving like idiots at well over 60 mph and sounding like they have a hole in their exhaust. Yeah, good, makes me want to know them better. Not!!

The plan now was to head to the beach area of West Seattle, which was our original luncheon destination. As it was a beautiful sunny day, we thought lunch overlooking the water and across to some nice hills would be good. Apparently so did everyone else who wasn’t in Seattle downtown dressed in green. Cars everywhere and no parking in sight. Eventually we found a parking spot a way down and in a residential backstreet. Unfortunately, as we didn’t get to the museum this morning, we were a tad early and the local brewery we had lined up for a late lunch wasn’t yet open (it was only 11.10am).

So, we found a seat on the edge of the beach and looked at Peugeot Sound, ferries, boats and a couple of idiots that decided it was a sensible to go for a swim.

Eventually noon rocked around and the cidery we wanted to visit opened. After a glass of quite nice cider, we made some decision about what to do next as basically all our original plans for the day had not worked. We picked up some fish and chips and found a picnic bench on the beach, in the sun. We chilled, watched people, watched the ferries and a sea lion cruising along about 10m offshore. Views were fantastic.

We then headed home and had discussions about what to do next. All up a rather pleasant day, even after it started badly.
