I wouldn’t recommend Kamloops as a holiday destination; it just seemed a dusty windy sterile city. I suspect the dust is because they grit the roads during snow and don’t sweep it up again, so it just blows around. The hills around are barren, not sure if that is from tailings from gold mining (and lots of lovely cyanide) or excess logging. Anyway, I wasn’t super impressed, and quite happy to check out of our overheated hotel room and hit the road.
Slowly the scenery changed, the trees grew back, the hills became stepper and the mountains appeared. It was a stunning sunny day, so the peaks of the Rockies were glowing. We were taking turns driving so both had time to enjoy the views whilst the other dodged trucks on highway 1. We have 3 nights in Golden with not much to do except look at the beautiful mountains, maybe go for a picnic, and chill out.
We have a nice view from the front deck of our apartment.
